On May 4, 1991, when she was nearly four years old, she made headlines as a battered child. Her assailant was her stepfather, who burned her skin with cigarette butts. Her mother, who was then in Dubai working as beauty consultant in a duty free store, immediately came home. She came not to take care of her daughter, however, but to bail out her partner, who was in detention.[1] Mercado's life story was featured in the weekly drama anthology Magpakailanman on October 14, 2004. She is now the official spokesperson of the Bata Foundation (Christian Mission Services), a non-governmental organization.
She is the former girlfriend of co-StarStruck survivor Mark Herras. They started dating on April 29, 2004 and broke up on September 2005.
She then got pregnant by her ex-boyfriend Patrick Garcia, who, reportedly, has distanced himself upon learning about the pregnancy. On August 16, 2008, she gave birth, via Caesarian section (8-9 p.m.) to an 8.12 pound (3.68 kg) baby boy at St. Luke's Hospital, Quezon City. Her child's name is Alex Jazz "AJ" Mercado.[2][3][4]
On April 9, 2010, Jennylyn Mercado and actor, Dennis Trillo, admitted that they are "exclusively dating" after a Philippine Tabloid released photos of them holding hands while strolling in a shopping center in Hong Kong.[5][6]
Last October 28, 2010, Jennylyn was reportedly rushed to the hospital due to a minor heart attack.[7]
On March 5, 2011, after almost a year of being together, Jennylyn and Dennis called it quits. Their break-up didn't surface the tabloids until after March 25. It was said that Dennis was jealous of Jen's son's father, Patrick Garcia that caused the fight which Dennis in turn hurt Jen physically. Both are mum about this issue. In June 2011 issue of Yes! Magazine, Jennylyn admitted she was physically hurt by actor, Dennis Trillo
"'Sa sobrang gulat ko doon sa mga sinabi niya sa 'kin, umakyat talaga 'yong dugo ko sa ulo. Talagang nag-init 'yong ulo ko. Talagang nasampal ko siya,' Jennylyn admits. (I was taken by surprise by all the things he said to me, so I got so mad. That's when I slapped him.)
But this was nothing to how Dennis retaliated, Jennylyn says, as demonstrates how Dennis allegedly kept her on a headlock while dragging her across his living room.
'Dala-dala niya po ako... papunta doon sa may sliding glass door niya... 'Tapos, hinagis niya po ako pababa. Patapon po, e. Kaya bumagsak po ako. Nalaglag po ako sa sahig. Medyo masama 'yong bagsak ko, kasi parang balakang 'yong bumagsak,' she recounts. (He dragged me... towards the sliding glass door in his place... Then he threw me downwards. He literally threw me. So I really fell on to the floor. I felt my fall that bad because I felt it in my hips.)
Until now, Jen admits that she hasn't recovered from the hurtful words Dennis hurled at her. 'Hindi maganda 'yong mga sinabi niya sa akin. Sobrang minaliit niya ako, para akong walang kwenta, winasak niya pagkatao ko,' she says. (He said such bad things about me. He belittled me so much like I'm such a worthless person, he destroyed my confidence." [8][9]
On May 21, 2011, Luis Manzano admitted on Entertainment Live that he and Jennylyn are "definitely dating".[10]
